Subversive Design

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery: 12 October 2013 - 9 March 2014

Subversive Design was a major exhibition of objects that challenge perceived ideas, contain hidden messages and address social issues and political comment. It included historic objects as well as modern and contemporary items.

The accepted brief for designers and makers has always been to produce well-made goods, fit for practical use. However, many have also employed shape and decoration to ask questions about political and social issues of their times, or about form and function. This was the subject of Subversive Design. The themes were illustrated and debated through 130 objects, by leading and emerging international designers, and were divided into three sections: Big Issues; Form Vs Function; and Subverting the Body

Designers included: Leigh Bowery, Sebastian Brajkovic, Campana Brothers Stephen Dixon, Jean Paul Gaultier, Terry de Havilland, Barbara Hulanicki, Studio Job, Stephen Jones, Rebecca Joselyn, Andrew Livingstone, Peggy van der Neer, Grayson Perry, Pharmacopoeia, Richard Slee, Philippe Starck, Timorous Beasties, Michele Walker, Richard Wentworth, Vivienne Westwood & Malcolm McLaren, Tapio Wirkkala and many more.
