The Noise Abatement Society: John Connell Awards

The annual John Connell Awards, named after the Noise Abatement Society’s far-sighted founder, are held at the Palace of Westminster. They are attended by local authorities, acoustics experts, companies committed to providing quieter products and services, and high profile individuals who campaign for a more peaceful environment.

John Connell OBE lobbied the Noise Abatement Act through Parliament in 1960 when noise became a statutory nuisance in the UK for the first time. These annual awards, known as the ‘Noise Oscars’, are now in their 17th year. They acknowledge the importance of the quality of sound in our lives, and champion vital advances in reducing the negative impact of unnecessary noise for the public benefit.

There have been over 160 recipients of the awards including local authorities, industry, commerce and individuals, all honoured for the significant impact they have made to improve the aural environment.

The award categories have included:

  • John Connell Local Authority Award: for services and campaigns that are shining examples of co-operation and creative solutions to solve noise problems in the community.

  • John Connell Quiet Cities Collaboration Award: recognises innovation, best practice and collaboration in sustainable urban deliveries to minimise noise.

  • John Connell Innovation Award: encourages the development of pioneering approaches and new schemes to resolve noise pollution.

  • John Connell Soundscape Award: for significant advances in the practical application of Soundscape principles in line with the international standard.

  • John Connell Silent Approach Award: for significant products and services that reduce excessive noise in the community.

  • John Connell Quiet Logistics Technology Award: for advances in low noise technology in the logistics industry to facilitate quieter deliveries.

  • Quiet Mark Award: for a company showing outstanding eco-quiet values and innovation.

  • John Connell Special Commendation: honours an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to raising the profile of noise pollution, to effect solutions for the public benefit.

The John Connell Awards 2017 will be held on Tuesday 31 October.
