Inquisitive Eyes: Slade Painters in Edwardian Wessex
Royal West of England Academy: Spring 2016
This major exhibition, and accompanying book, by Gwen Yarker, gave an insight into a lost chapter of British art. They included fascinating new research on the influence of Wessex on painters between 1880 – 1914. Well-known names such as Philip Wilson Steer, Henry Tonks, William Open, Augustus John, Charles Conder, Roger Fry and Vanessa Bell were set alongside artists who were very respected in their day, but who now deserve to be better known. The exhibition also highlighted little-known John Everett, their Slade contemporary, who was at the centre of a fascinating circle of Slade artists, and introduced them to the landscape of Wessex.
