Indigo: A Blue to Dye For

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and Hove Museum & Art Gallery: 29 September 2007 - 6 January 2008

This exhibition, shown across the two major museums in Brighton & Hove, was a major survey of the world’s oldest and most distinctive dyestuff, Indigo. It included historical and contemporary indigo-dyed items from around the world in art, craft, fashion and design.

Exhibition highlights included The History of Indigo; Alchemy: the transformation of Indigo from plant to dyestuff; Decorative Techniques Worldwide: the wide-ranging uses of indigo by different cultures; Blue Art: featuring a spectacular textile installation by Hiroyuki Shindo; Indigo in British craft: 18th century to the present; Myth, Medicine and Ritual: beliefs in the transformative properties of Indigo; Fashion: from Levi's blue jeans to Jean Paul Gaultier; Workwear: from denim prison uniform to a Japanese firefighter's outfit.
